Why the makeup long is the trap
The makeup long feels responsible. You skipped 18, so you
schedule 18 the first weekend back. Or you stack two medium-long
days to catch up. Ego calls it commitment. The body calls it a
second stress on tissue that just had a gap.
50–60% of the last real long is the cap in that first week back.
If the last real long was about 12, you are not jumping to 18. If
the last real long was about 19, you still do not open with 19 on
day five.
Missed miles stay missed means the log does not get fiction added
later. Planned vs actual keeps the blank. The next week is built
from what you can absorb, not from guilt arithmetic.
The makeup long also wrecks the week around it. You force the
long, then need extra zeros, then feel behind again, then force
another long. That loop is how a single gap becomes a month of
noise.
What week 1 back is for
Week 1 back is aerobic contact and tissue tolerance.
Conversational. Short. Boring.
It is not for a named quality session. It is not for a full
mountain long. It is not for proving the zero days did not count.
Optional short strides on day 4 are optional. They are not a
workout in disguise. If legs feel wrong, skip them. If you turn
strides into repeats, you skipped re-entry.
If day 3 is a walk, that is still re-entry. Walking does not
restart the four-day clock as a loophole to squeeze a long in
early.
Keep the Mon–Sun log honest during week 1. Write the minutes.
Write the zeros. Do not upgrade a tired shuffle into a training
breakthrough in the notes.
What week 2 back is for
Quality returns in week 2, not week 1. That means the first hard
session waits until the easy re-entry week is done.
Week 2 is still not a license to dump every missed quality from
the gap into one Tuesday. One session. Then see how the rest of
the Mon–Sun week holds.
Long can grow from the 50–60% cap toward normal only if the easy
days stayed easy. If you turned re-entry into sneaky threshold,
you did not do re-entry.
A practical test: could you describe every run in week 1 as
conversational or off? If not, week 2 quality should wait another
easy stretch.
